Cookie Policy

A plain-language breakdown of every cookie Price & Pick uses, why we use it, how long it sticks around, and how to turn it off. Cross-reference our privacy policy, affiliate disclosure, or terms of use.

โšก TL;DR

The short version

  • We use four categories of cookies โ€” strictly necessary, analytics, affiliate tracking, and preferences.
  • Only the necessary ones are required for the site to work. Everything else is optional.
  • You control your settings any time via the cookie banner or your browser's privacy settings.
  • We don't use cookies to sell your data โ€” affiliate tracking only attributes purchases that support our editorial work. See our affiliate disclosure.
  • Most cookies expire automatically โ€” typically between 30 days and 24 months, depending on type.

01 What are cookies

Cookies are small text files that a website stores on your device when you visit. They let the site remember things between visits or page loads โ€” like whether you're logged in, what you've dismissed, or which referral link brought you here. We also use similar technologies like local storage and pixel tags, which this policy covers under the umbrella term "cookies."

Cookies aren't inherently good or bad โ€” it depends on what they're used for. Some are essential to making the site work. Others help us understand traffic, support our affiliate partnerships (see our affiliate disclosure), or remember your preferences. None of them let us access your hard drive, run programs on your device, or identify you personally without your consent.

02 Cookies we use

We organize our cookies into four categories. Only one of them is required for the site to function โ€” the rest are optional and can be turned off without breaking your experience.

CategoryPurposeCan you opt out?
Strictly necessaryLogin sessions, security, basic site navigationNo โ€” required
AnalyticsUnderstand traffic patterns and what content worksYes
Affiliate trackingAttribute purchases that support our editorial workYes
PreferencesRemember dark/light mode, font size, dismissed bannersYes

03 Strictly necessary

These cookies are required for the site to function and can't be disabled in our systems. They're usually only set in response to actions you take, like logging in, filling out a form, or setting your privacy preferences.

  • Session ID โ€” keeps you logged in as you move between pages
  • CSRF token โ€” protects your session from cross-site request forgery attacks
  • Cookie consent record โ€” remembers which cookie categories you've accepted or declined
  • Load balancing cookie โ€” routes your traffic to the right server for a stable connection

Why these can't be turned off: blocking these cookies in your browser may break core site features like staying logged in or submitting forms โ€” but you're always free to do so through your browser settings.

04 Analytics cookies

These cookies help us understand how readers use the site โ€” what pages get traffic, what's confusing, and what's slow โ€” so we can improve it. All analytics data is aggregated and anonymized before we look at it.

  • Google Analytics 4 โ€” page views, session duration, traffic sources, device type. IP addresses are masked before reaching Google.
  • Internal logging โ€” basic server-side request logs used for debugging and uptime monitoring

You can opt out of analytics cookies at any time via the cookie banner, without affecting your ability to browse, read, or use any part of the site.

05 Affiliate tracking

When you click a product link on Price & Pick and make a purchase, we may earn a commission โ€” this is how we fund our testing and stay independent of advertisers. Affiliate cookies are what let the retailer know the referral came from us.

  • Amazon Associates โ€” tracks qualifying purchases made shortly after clicking an Amazon link from our site
  • Skimlinks / Impact / Awin / Commission Junction โ€” affiliate networks used for non-Amazon retail partners

What this cookie can't do: it can't see your payment details, identify you personally, or follow you to unrelated sites. It only confirms that a purchase was referred by us. Full detail in our affiliate disclosure.

06 Preference cookies

These cookies remember choices you've made so you don't have to reset them every visit.

  • Display mode โ€” remembers dark or light mode if you've switched it
  • Dismissed banners โ€” stops a banner from reappearing once you've closed it
  • Region/currency โ€” remembers your preferred currency on price displays where applicable

You can clear these any time through your browser's privacy settings, and the site will fall back to its default settings on your next visit.

07 Third-party cookies

Some cookies on our site are set by third-party services we use to run analytics, deliver content, or support affiliate tracking โ€” not by Price & Pick directly. Each provider is bound by its own privacy policy.

  • Google Analytics 4 โ€” analytics, as described above
  • Cloudflare โ€” security and content delivery
  • Affiliate networks โ€” Amazon Associates, Skimlinks, Impact, Awin, Commission Junction

We don't control these third-party cookies directly, but we only work with providers whose privacy practices meet our standards. See our privacy policy for the full list of service providers and what they can see.

08 How long cookies last

Cookie lifespans vary by type. Some disappear the moment you close your browser; others persist to keep your preferences across visits.

Cookie typeTypical duration
Session cookiesDeleted when you close your browser
Cookie consent record12 months
Analytics cookiesUp to 14 months (Google Analytics default)
Affiliate tracking cookies24 hours to 30 days, depending on retailer
Preference cookiesUp to 24 months

09 Managing your cookies

You're in control of which cookies you accept. There are a few ways to manage them:

  • Cookie banner โ€” appears on your first visit, letting you accept or decline non-essential categories
  • Browser settings โ€” every major browser lets you block or delete cookies, either site-by-site or globally
  • Opt-out tools โ€” Google offers a browser add-on to opt out of Google Analytics specifically

Heads up: blocking strictly necessary cookies through your browser may prevent parts of the site from working correctly, like staying logged in or submitting a form.

10 Do Not Track signals

Some browsers offer a "Do Not Track" (DNT) setting. There's currently no industry-wide standard for how websites should respond to it, so Price & Pick does not currently change its behavior based on DNT signals. We rely instead on the cookie banner and your browser's native cookie controls to give you direct, granular control over tracking.

11 Changes to this policy

We may update this cookie policy occasionally to reflect changes in the cookies we use or in applicable law. When we make material changes, we'll:

  • Update the "Last updated" date at the top of this page
  • Re-prompt the cookie banner if the change affects what we collect
  • Display a banner on the site for 30 days after significant changes

For how we handle the data collected through cookies, see our full privacy policy.
