LEGO vs. Mega Bloks — are they the same?

Spoiler: no, they're not. Mega Bloks costs less per piece but the brick quality, click-fit precision, and licensing partnerships make LEGO the gold standard. We tested both side-by-side across 8 set categories — here's where each one wins.

How to buy toys & games in 2026

Toys are the rare category where the "premium" version (a $349 LEGO Technic kit) and the "budget" version (a $22 box of wooden blocks) can both deliver the exact same outcome — hours of focused, screen-free, imagination-fueled play. Building sets, board games, video games, plush, and pretend-play toys all reward parents who buy with intention.

Our editors test every toy in real homes with real kids before recommending it. Here's the framework we use ourselves whenever we're buying toys we hope will earn their keep, not get abandoned in a closet by week two.

The best toy purchases are the ones that get pulled off the shelf again and again. The worst are the loud, battery-hungry, single-purpose plastic things bought in a panic an hour before a birthday party.

5 things to check before you buy

1

Match age recommendations carefully

"3+" is a real cutoff, not a suggestion — it's based on choking-hazard testing. A toy aimed at 6-year-olds bought for a 3-year-old gets ignored, broken, or worse. Buy at age, not aspirationally.

2

Open-ended toys last longer

LEGO bricks, Magna-Tiles, blocks, art supplies, dress-up clothes — toys with no single "right" use way outlast the licensed-character single-purpose stuff. Look for "what can the kid do with it" not "what does it do".

3

Watch for safety recalls

The CPSC posts toy recalls almost weekly. Quick check on cpsc.gov before buying any used toys, and especially before re-gifting hand-me-downs. Magnetic, button-battery, and small-parts recalls are the most common.

4

Battery toys = ongoing cost

That $30 light-up plush eats 3 AA batteries every 2 weeks. Over a year, you'll spend more on batteries than the toy. If a toy needs batteries, prefer rechargeable models or build it into the budget upfront.

5

Buy direct for warranty & replacement parts

LEGO, Magna-Tiles, and Melissa & Doug all replace missing/broken pieces for free if you buy direct from their official sites. Marketplace sellers and resellers can't honor those guarantees. Worth the extra dollar or two.

Frequently asked

The questions parents ask us about shopping for toys — answered honestly.

What age is LEGO actually appropriate for?
LEGO Duplo (large bricks) is 1.5+. Standard LEGO is rated 4+ for the small starter sets and 6+ for most City and Friends sets. Technic and Architecture sets typically start at 8+, with the most complex Icons sets rated 18+ (these are adult display sets, not toys for kids). The age rating is based on choking-hazard testing of the smallest pieces — take it seriously for kids under 4. Our full LEGO by age guide breaks down every theme.
Switch vs. PS5 vs. Xbox — which one for kids?
Nintendo Switch is the easiest answer for most families. Mario, Zelda, Pokemon, Animal Crossing, Splatoon, and Mario Kart are all kid-appropriate first-party titles, and the handheld mode means it travels easily. PS5 and Xbox have stronger graphics and more "AAA" titles, but most popular titles are rated 13+ or 17+. Switch wins for ages 5-12; PS5 and Xbox make more sense for teens and adults. Read our full console comparison.
Are Squishmallows actually worth it?
Yes for the soft, hug-able plush quality — they really are softer than most other plush toys. The "collectibility" hype is mostly a kid-driven trend, though, and resale values fluctuate. We recommend buying 1-3 favorites at full retail rather than chasing rare ones at marked-up prices. The $25 standard 16-inch is the sweet spot.
Used toys vs. new — when does it make sense?
Used works great for big, durable items — LEGO bricks, wooden blocks, Magna-Tiles, board games, train sets, and outdoor equipment. Buy from BrickLink (LEGO), Facebook Marketplace, or eBay and you'll save 40-60%. Avoid used for: car seats, anything with batteries that may have leaked, plush toys (hard to clean thoroughly), and anything that's been recalled. Always cross-check on cpsc.gov before buying used.
What's the difference between Reviews, Compare, and the category pages?
Reviews are our editors' deep-dives into specific toys and brands after weeks of hands-on testing with real kids. Compare is the side-by-side tool — pick any two consoles, building-toy brands, or board games and stack their features and prices. Category pages (like this one) are the entry point for browsing — current deals, trending toys, and links to the most relevant reviews and comparisons.
Do you accept money from toy brands or retailers?
We have affiliate relationships with major toy retailers — they're how the site stays free to read. But brands and retailers cannot pay to influence our reviews, ratings, or rankings. Our editorial team operates separately from the partnerships team. Read more on our Affiliate Disclosure and About pages.
