How to buy auto parts in 2026

Auto parts is the rare category where the "premium" version (Mobil 1 Extended Performance) and the "budget" version (Pep Boys store-brand 5W-30) often deliver almost the same protection — but not always. Tires, brakes, and batteries reward owners who buy quality. Wiper blades, air filters, and floor mats reward owners who shop on price.

Our editors run a small fleet of vehicles ourselves — daily drivers, project cars, motorcycles. Here's the framework we use whenever we're buying parts we hope will keep us out of the shop and on the road.

The best auto purchases are the ones your owner's manual confirms are correct for your specific car. The worst are the parts bought because they look cool on Instagram and don't actually fit your vehicle.

5 things to check before you buy

1

Match the oil viscosity to your owner's manual

5W-30 vs 0W-20 is not a preference — it's an engineering specification. Using the wrong viscosity can cost fuel economy or wear an engine prematurely. Check the owner's manual or the under-hood sticker before you buy. Synthetic vs conventional is your choice; viscosity is the manufacturer's call.

2

Buy tires as a set of 4, not pairs

Even matched tires from the same manufacturer have slight tread-depth variations after 5,000 miles. Mixing new and old tires changes your car's handling balance and can confuse traction control. If you can only afford 2 new tires, put them on the rear regardless of front/rear-wheel drive.

3

Free engine code reads can save $100+

Both AutoZone and O'Reilly will read your check engine light for free. Get the code, search the part number on YouTube — half the time it's a $20 sensor and a 15-minute job, not the $400 dealer estimate. Don't pay a shop "diagnostic fee" before you've gotten the free code first.

4

Battery age matters more than cold-cranking amps

Even premium AGM batteries die in 4-6 years regardless of the warranty. Check the manufacture date code on the top — if it's over 3 years, replacement is on the horizon. Cold-cranking amps matter for sub-freezing climates only; for warm regions, group size and reserve capacity matter more.

5

Don't skip on brake fluid every 3 years

Brake fluid absorbs water from the air. After 3 years, the boiling point drops enough that aggressive braking can cause vapor lock — a sudden, terrifying loss of brake pressure. A $15 bottle of DOT 4 and 30 minutes of bleeding prevents the failure that no anti-lock system can save you from.

Frequently asked

The questions car owners ask us about shopping for parts and service — answered honestly.

Synthetic vs. conventional oil — is the upgrade really worth it?
For most modern cars built after 2010, yes. Full synthetic oil costs roughly $10-15 more per change but goes 7,500-10,000 miles between changes (vs 3,000-5,000 for conventional), provides better cold-start protection, and resists thermal breakdown at high temperatures. Over a year of driving, synthetic typically costs the same or less. For pre-2000 vehicles with high mileage, however, sticking with conventional or high-mileage formulas is sometimes safer due to seal compatibility.
When do I actually need to replace my tires?
The penny test (Lincoln's head upside down — if you see all of his head, replace) is the universal benchmark, but tread depth alone isn't the whole picture. Replace tires by 6 years of age regardless of tread (rubber compounds harden and lose grip), if you see cracking on the sidewalls, if there's any cord or steel showing, or if you experience sudden loss of grip in wet conditions. Buy tires in matched sets of 4 whenever possible.
AutoZone vs. O'Reilly — which retailer is actually better?
AutoZone wins for free in-store services (battery testing, code reads, wiper installation, Loan-A-Tool program) and wider store coverage. O'Reilly Auto Parts wins on professional-grade parts selection, slightly better customer service, and the O'Rewards 5% back program. Advance Auto Parts and Pep Boys both routinely beat AutoZone and O'Reilly on online prices once you factor in their 25%-off promo codes. Read our full AutoZone vs O'Reilly comparison.
Are jack stands actually necessary if I have a hydraulic floor jack?
Absolutely yes — and not optional. A hydraulic floor jack is a lifting tool, not a holding tool. Hydraulic jacks can fail without warning when their seals give out — and a 4,000-pound vehicle dropping a few inches will crush you instantly. Always set the parking brake, chock the wheels, lift with the jack, then place jack stands at the manufacturer's lift points before getting under the car. Cost of jack stands: $45. Cost of not using them: catastrophic.
Is a $99 OBD-II scanner really as good as a $400 one?
For 95% of home-mechanic use cases, yes. The BlueDriver Bluetooth Pro at $99 reads all OBD-II codes, displays live engine data, runs smog/emissions tests, and pairs with your phone — covering everything you need for routine diagnosis. The $400+ scanners (Autel, Snap-On, Foxwell) add ABS/airbag/transmission codes, advanced bidirectional control, and module reprogramming — useful for shops, overkill for driveway repairs. Start with the BlueDriver; upgrade only if you're going pro.
