Lululemon Align vs. Athleta Salutation: Which Legging Actually Wins?

This is the round that defines both leggings' identities. The Lululemon Align uses Nulu™ fabric — a proprietary ultra-lightweight nylon-elastane blend that is, without question, the softest fabric I've worn on my lower body. Calling it "buttery" is an understatement. The Align genuinely feels like wearing nothing, which is exactly the sensation Lululemon designed it for. The weight is featherlight; you stop noticing the fabric within about five minutes of putting them on.

The Athleta Salutation uses PowerVita™ fabric — a medium-weight, more structured fabric that is undeniably soft but has a clearly different hand feel. It's closer to a compression fabric than a second-skin feel. It's smooth, comfortable, and pleasant to wear — but it doesn't disappear on your body the way the Align does. You're aware you're wearing a legging. Winner: Lululemon Align — and it's not close. If "naked" fabric feel is your priority, nothing at any price point matches the Nulu.

Waistbands are where leggings are won and lost. The Lululemon Align's waistband is part of what makes it the "naked" experience — it's deliberately minimal, thin, and unobtrusive. In yoga and low-intensity movement this is perfect. But in higher-impact activities, I noticed the Align's waistband rolling down slightly at the front during sun salutations and forward folds — a well-documented issue that Lululemon has partially addressed over the years but hasn't fully solved. In a size 6, it stayed up about 85% of the time; in activities involving a lot of forward bending, I found myself tugging it up.

The Athleta Salutation's 3-inch wide waistband is the anti-Align in the best way. It sits firmly at the high waist, doesn't fold, doesn't roll, and provides a degree of core support during movement. Even during a 60-minute power yoga class with extensive forward folds and hip openers, the Salutation's waistband didn't shift once. Winner: Athleta Salutation — the wider waistband simply performs more reliably across all activity levels.

The squat test is non-negotiable for yoga leggings. The fear of wearing see-through fabric during a forward fold is real and legitimate — and has historically been a concern with ultra-thin fabrics like the Align's Nulu. In sizes 4 and above, the Align passes the squat test with confidence — the fabric is thin but not sheer under normal stretch. However, in size 0 and 2 (the smallest sizes), the fabric is stretched to its limits and some sheerness can occur. In size 6 (tested), the Align passed cleanly with no visible sheerness in a full deep squat.

The Athleta Salutation passes the squat test in every size, unequivocally. The PowerVita fabric's medium weight means there's no sheerness risk regardless of size. For women who have had bad experiences with sheer leggings in the past — or who simply never want to think about it — the Salutation eliminates the concern entirely. Winner: Athleta Salutation — total confidence at every size, no caveats.

This is where the Align was built to win — and it does. In a yoga studio, the Nulu fabric's ultra-light weight and minimal friction make it genuinely ideal for mat-based practice. The fabric flows with your body during transitions, doesn't bunch behind the knees in seated postures, and the "naked" sensation eliminates distraction during practice. After 10 weeks of weekly yoga classes in both pairs, I consistently preferred the Align for yoga. The Nulu fabric's softness and its total absence of compression allows the body to move completely freely, which is what yoga demands.

The Salutation performed well in yoga — better than most leggings — but the structured PowerVita fabric has a subtle compression quality that, while beneficial for running, is slightly at odds with the "freedom of movement" philosophy of yoga. It's excellent for yoga, but it's not the best yoga legging in its class. Winner: Lululemon Align — for pure yoga performance, this remains the benchmark and the reason the Align has dominated the yoga studio market for over a decade.

The Align was not designed for running — and it shows. The Nulu fabric's ultra-softness and minimal weight mean it lacks the structure and support that higher-impact activity requires. During a 5K run, the Align's waistband slipped down at the front by the 2km mark. The fabric also tends to "swim" slightly during running — the lack of compression means the legging moves with momentum rather than staying firmly against the body. For a brisk walk or low-intensity cardio, the Align is fine. For anything involving repeated impact, it's not the right tool.

The Athleta Salutation, by contrast, was built with running in mind. The PowerVita fabric provides just enough compression to hold the legging against your body during impact, the waistband didn't shift at any point across six weeks of testing runs, and the 7/8 length (hitting above the ankle) is ideal for running form. Add the two deep side pockets (phone-width on each side), and this is a genuinely excellent running legging. Winner: Athleta Salutation — and it's not even close for high-impact activity.

This round has one line verdict: the standard Lululemon Align has no pockets. Zero. None. The waistband has a small hidden pocket that fits a key or a credit card — too small for a modern smartphone. For most women, this is the Align's single biggest frustration. You cannot carry your phone during a workout without a separate armband, fanny pack, or sports bra pocket. For a $98 legging, the absence of functional pockets is a design choice that aged poorly as smartphones became essential workout companions.

The Athleta Salutation Stash lives up to its "Stash" name. It has two deep side pockets (each large enough for a standard iPhone 15), plus a hidden stash pocket in the waistband for a key or card. During testing I carried my phone, AirPods case, and a $20 bill without the pockets bulging, bouncing, or shifting. Winner: Athleta Salutation — by a landslide. Note: Lululemon does offer the Align in a pocketed version (+$10) — but the standard Align remains pocketless.

The Align's Nulu fabric is sublime to wear but demands careful handling. After 20+ machine washes on cold with the leggings turned inside out, my Align showed faint pilling at the inner thigh — a common issue reported widely by Align wearers. The fabric also requires hand-washing or a gentle cycle at most; aggressive washing will degrade the Nulu faster than any competing fabric in this category. The Align is a legging you need to baby slightly.

The Athleta Salutation's PowerVita fabric, being more structured and a heavier weight, proved significantly more durable across 20+ washes under identical conditions. No pilling. No bobbling. The waistband retained its shape perfectly. The recycled nylon composition also means the fabric is slightly more resilient to the friction cycles of machine washing. Winner: Athleta Salutation — for long-term wear durability, the more structured fabric wins clearly. The Align is more precious; the Salutation is more bulletproof.

The Align has become a cultural object beyond activewear. Its buttery-soft fabric and elegant minimal silhouette mean it looks and feels at home in a coffee shop, on a flight, at brunch, or running errands — not just in a yoga studio. The Align is probably the most broadly wearable legging in the market; its softness makes it the casual loungewear choice as well as the workout choice. I wore the Align on two cross-country flights during testing and it was, predictably, the most comfortable thing I could have chosen.

The Athleta Salutation is excellent activewear that also transitions well to casual wear — the PowerVita fabric looks polished and put-together — but it has a slightly more "workout" visual identity than the Align. The structured fabric reads as more purposefully athletic, which is great in the gym but slightly less versatile in an off-duty context. Winner: Lululemon Align — for all-day, multi-context wearing, the Align's "naked" luxury feel is unmatched in versatility.

Lululemon has made public sustainability commitments — the Brand Is Change program, goals for responsible materials by 2030 — but the standard Align Pant is made from virgin nylon and Lycra elastane, not recycled materials. Lululemon has a responsible manufacturing audit process, but it is not certified by an independent third-party body at the same level as Athleta. For sustainability-conscious shoppers, the Align is a premium product from a brand that is working toward better practices but isn't there yet.

Athleta operates as a certified B Corporation — the most credible independent business ethics certification available, requiring Athleta to meet rigorous standards across social and environmental performance, accountability, and transparency. The Salutation's PowerVita fabric uses 72% recycled nylon, significantly reducing its environmental footprint versus virgin nylon. Athleta also has broader size inclusivity (XXS–3X) versus Lululemon's 0–20 range. Winner: Athleta Salutation — unambiguously. No other major activewear brand at this price point has Athleta's combination of B-Corp certification and recycled materials.

At $98, the Lululemon Align is a premium product — but the cost-per-wear calculus requires factoring in two things: its delicate fabric's longevity (shorter than the Salutation) and its lack of pockets (requiring additional accessories to replace pocket utility). If you hand-wash and treat it gently, an Align can last 3–4 years. If you machine-wash it like a normal legging, expect 1–2 years before pilling makes it feel worn. For the yoga-specific use case — where the Align genuinely has no equal — $98 is defensible. For a general all-purpose activewear legging, there are better-value options.

At $89, the Athleta Salutation is $9 cheaper, comes with three pockets, is made from more durable recycled fabric, and is backed by a B-Corp certification. It lasts longer, does more, and costs less. The Athleta Rewards program also provides loyalty points redeemable against future purchases. Winner: Athleta Salutation on pure value — for $9 less you get pockets, better durability, and a sustainability story. The Align wins on feel alone; the Salutation wins everything else.
