Orbitz Rewards is the free loyalty program built into Orbitz, the Expedia Group-owned online travel agency, and after testing it across a dozen real bookings this year, it remains one of the simplest loyalty programs in travel to actually understand. Instead of confusing miles or points-per-dollar math, Orbitz uses "Orbucks" — and the conversion is dead simple: $1 Orbuck equals $1 off a future hotel stay, full stop. There's no tier of redemption charts to study, no blackout dates, and no need to save up a minimum balance before you can use what you've earned.
The earning structure is straightforward once you know the rates: on Orbitz.com you earn 1% back in Orbucks on flights and 3% on hotels, packages, and activities; book through the Orbitz app instead and those rates jump to 2% on flights and 4% on everything else. Across our test bookings, the app consistently out-earned the website by a meaningful margin, which makes the case for installing it even if you'd normally just browse on desktop. A $500 hotel stay nets roughly $15 in Orbucks on the website or $20 on the app — modest, but it adds up over a year of travel, and Orbitz reports members who redeem Orbucks save about $60 on average annually.
On tier structure, every new member starts at Silver the moment they sign up — no minimum spend, no qualifying period. Silver already unlocks member-only "Insider Prices" and a dedicated Rewards customer service line. Stay 4 qualifying nights in a year and you're bumped to Gold, which adds perks like free Wi-Fi and breakfast at VIP Access partner hotels. Hit 12 nights and you reach Platinum, the tier where things get genuinely valuable: up to $50 in Orbucks reimbursement for incidentals like seat upgrades or bag fees, a free TSA PreCheck application (Orbitz covers the $85 fee), and complimentary room upgrades or early check-in at VIP Access properties when available.
The "Double Dip" feature — earning both Orbucks and your usual airline frequent flyer miles on the same flight booking — worked exactly as advertised in our testing, as long as we remembered to add the frequent flyer number through the airline's own confirmation page after booking through Orbitz. That's a small extra step but a real value-add: you're not forced to choose between Orbitz's program and the airline status you've already built.
The honest caveats: Orbucks can currently only be redeemed against hotel stays, not flights, car rentals, or activities — so if you mostly fly and rarely book hotels through Orbitz, the value here is limited. Orbucks also expire one year after they're earned, which is reasonable but worth tracking if you travel infrequently. And reaching Gold or Platinum status requires actual qualifying hotel nights booked through Orbitz specifically — staying 12 nights at a hotel you booked elsewhere doesn't count. That said, for a program that costs nothing to join and pays out real, flexible savings with zero blackout dates, Orbitz Rewards is a smart default to have running in the background of every trip.
