Olaplex Nº.3PLUS Complete Repair Treatment is the modern successor to the original Nº.3 Hair Perfector that effectively launched the "bond-building" category in at-home haircare nearly a decade ago. Olaplex has since reformulated the product as Nº.3PLUS, and after six weeks of testing on bleached, color-treated, and heat-damaged hair across three testers, the upgrade genuinely earns its name — this is a meaningfully different, faster-acting experience than the original formula many readers will already be familiar with.

The core technology remains patented OLAPLEX Bond Building Technology™, which works by rebuilding the disulfide bonds in hair that get broken during bleaching, coloring, and heat styling. What's new in the PLUS formula is the addition of a Damage Defense Cationic Complex, which Olaplex says enables "cortex-to-cuticle" repair — addressing damage both inside the hair shaft and on its outer surface — and a notably faster treatment window, down from the original's 3–10 minute range to a consistent 3-minute application.

The application experience across our testers was straightforward and genuinely fast. Applied generously to wet hair from roots to ends before shampooing, left on for 3 minutes, then rinsed and followed by Nº.4 shampoo and Nº.5 conditioner — the full pre-wash step added only a few minutes to a normal shower routine, which is a real improvement for anyone who found the original's longer wait times tedious on busy mornings.

The results on bleached and heavily color-treated hair were the most striking. Our bleached-hair tester, who color-treats every 6–8 weeks, reported visibly smoother strands and noticeably less breakage when detangling after just two uses. Olaplex's own clinical claims — 3X stronger hair after 4 uses and 3X softer hair versus bleached hair — tracked reasonably well with what we observed, though as with any haircare clinical claim, individual results varied by how damaged the hair was to begin with.

The results on heat-damaged but non-chemically-treated hair were more modest but still positive. Our tester who flat-irons daily without color treatment noticed improved softness and reduced frizz, though the transformation was less dramatic than on the bleached-hair tester — which makes sense, since the bond-rebuilding technology has more damage to address on chemically processed hair.

The honest caveat at $34.00 for 100 mL: this positions Nº.3PLUS as a premium pre-shampoo treatment, and the full benefit requires pairing it with Olaplex's own Nº.4 shampoo and Nº.5 conditioner as part of a system — using it as a standalone product with a different shampoo brand will likely produce less dramatic results than what's shown in Olaplex's own before-and-afters. For anyone with genuinely damaged, bleached, or heavily processed hair, the investment in the full system is generally worth it; for those with healthy, undamaged hair, the benefit will be far more subtle. We awarded it Best Bond-Building Treatment in the 2026 Best Haircare Awards. Browse our full beauty reviews or haircare category.

Our scoring breakdown

Scored across our 5-dimension rubric — read our testing methodology for how we calculate weighted scores.

Repair Effectiveness

8.9

Visibly smoother, less prone to breakage on bleached and heavily color-treated hair after just two uses. Most dramatic results on the most damaged hair.

Ease of Use

9.2

3-minute application is genuinely fast and convenient, a real improvement over the original formula's longer 3–10 minute window.

Hair Compatibility & Safety

9.0

Protein-free, sulfate-free, color-safe, and suitable for all hair types. No irritation or buildup reported across our three testers over 6 weeks.

Results on Less-Damaged Hair

7.0

Noticeable but more modest improvement on heat-damaged, non-chemically-treated hair compared to bleached or heavily processed hair.

Value

7.6

$34.00 for 100 mL is a premium price for a pre-shampoo treatment, with the best value realized when paired with the full Olaplex Nº.4/Nº.5 system.

+Pros

  • Genuinely faster than the original formula — a consistent 3-minute treatment time versus the previous 3–10 minute range
  • Most dramatic results on bleached/heavily color-treated hair — visibly smoother, less prone to breakage after just two uses
  • Patented Bond Building Technology™ — addresses damage at the molecular level, not just surface smoothing
  • Protein-free and sulfate-free — won't cause protein buildup or overload issues some bond-builders can cause
  • Color-safe for all hair types — suitable across straight, wavy, curly, and coily hair
  • Flexible usage frequency — works every 1–3 washes, or daily if more intensive repair is needed
  • Complimentary samples and free shipping on qualifying orders directly from Olaplex.com

Cons

  • Premium price for a pre-shampoo step — $34.00 for 100 mL adds up when paired with the full Nº.4/Nº.5 system
  • More modest results on undamaged or only heat-damaged hair — the more processed your hair is, the more dramatic the visible improvement
  • Best results require the full system — using Nº.3PLUS alone without Olaplex's own shampoo and conditioner likely won't match the brand's before-and-after results
  • Formula change can confuse repeat buyers — longtime Nº.3 users need to know the original formula has been replaced, not just renamed
  • Legacy Nº.3 still circulating at some retailers — shoppers should confirm whether they're buying old or new stock when ordering from third-party sellers

Frequently asked questions

Everything you need to know before buying Olaplex Nº.3PLUS.

What's the difference between Nº.3 and Nº.3PLUS?

Nº.3PLUS is Olaplex's reformulated successor to the original Nº.3 Hair Perfector. According to Olaplex's own comparison, both formulas are protein and sulfate-free, but the new Nº.3PLUS delivers results in a consistent 3 minutes (versus the original's 3–10 minute range), claims 3X softer hair, and offers what Olaplex calls "360° cortex-to-cuticle repair" via an added Damage Defense Cationic Complex layered onto the original Bond Building Technology™.

If you're a longtime Nº.3 user, the switch is essentially an upgrade rather than a different product line — same core purpose, faster and reportedly more effective. The original Nº.3 is still sold at some third-party retailers while existing stock lasts, but it is no longer the flagship product on Olaplex's own site.

Do I need the full Olaplex system, or can I use Nº.3PLUS alone?

You can use Nº.3PLUS as a standalone pre-shampoo treatment with any shampoo and conditioner, and you'll likely still see some benefit. However, Olaplex's own clinical results and before-and-after photos are specifically achieved using the full system — Nº.3PLUS followed by Nº.4 Bond Maintenance® Shampoo and Nº.5 Bond Maintenance® Conditioner. For the most dramatic, system-matching results, pairing all three products together is the recommended approach.

Is Nº.3PLUS a deep conditioner?

No — this is an important distinction Olaplex is explicit about. Nº.3PLUS (like the original Nº.3) is a pre-shampoo strengthening and reparative treatment, not a conditioner. It works at the bond level inside the hair shaft rather than simply coating the hair with moisturizing agents the way a conditioner does. You should still follow up with a proper conditioner after shampooing for day-to-day softness and detangling.

Will leaving Nº.3PLUS in longer than recommended give better results?

No — according to Olaplex, leaving Nº.3PLUS in for longer than the recommended time will not increase the benefits. You can achieve reparative results in as little as 3 minutes, and the longest beneficial usage time for the related Pro formula is 10 minutes. Overnight use is not recommended and won't provide additional repair beyond the standard treatment window.

Is Olaplex Nº.3PLUS safe for color-treated hair?

Yes — Nº.3PLUS is specifically formulated to be color-safe and suitable for all types of chemical and heat damage, including bleached and color-treated hair. In fact, our testing found the most dramatic visible improvements specifically on bleached and heavily color-processed hair, where there's more underlying bond damage for the treatment to address compared to healthy, undamaged hair.

Olaplex Nº.3PLUS vs K18 Leave-In Repair Mask — which should I buy?

Buy Olaplex Nº.3PLUS if: you want a rinse-out pre-shampoo treatment integrated into your existing shower routine, you prefer a protein-free formula, and you're working within a more moderate budget — at $34.00 it's significantly cheaper than K18's $75.00 price point.

Buy K18 if: you want a no-rinse, leave-in treatment for maximum convenience, you're comfortable with K18's peptide-based (rather than protein-free) approach, and budget is less of a constraint. In our testing, both performed well on damaged hair, with K18 scoring slightly higher overall for convenience and heat-damage recovery, while Nº.3PLUS offers a stronger value proposition for bleached and color-treated hair at a meaningfully lower price.
