Olaplex Nº.3PLUS Complete Repair Treatment is the modern successor to the original Nº.3 Hair Perfector that effectively launched the "bond-building" category in at-home haircare nearly a decade ago. Olaplex has since reformulated the product as Nº.3PLUS, and after six weeks of testing on bleached, color-treated, and heat-damaged hair across three testers, the upgrade genuinely earns its name — this is a meaningfully different, faster-acting experience than the original formula many readers will already be familiar with.
The core technology remains patented OLAPLEX Bond Building Technology™, which works by rebuilding the disulfide bonds in hair that get broken during bleaching, coloring, and heat styling. What's new in the PLUS formula is the addition of a Damage Defense Cationic Complex, which Olaplex says enables "cortex-to-cuticle" repair — addressing damage both inside the hair shaft and on its outer surface — and a notably faster treatment window, down from the original's 3–10 minute range to a consistent 3-minute application.
The application experience across our testers was straightforward and genuinely fast. Applied generously to wet hair from roots to ends before shampooing, left on for 3 minutes, then rinsed and followed by Nº.4 shampoo and Nº.5 conditioner — the full pre-wash step added only a few minutes to a normal shower routine, which is a real improvement for anyone who found the original's longer wait times tedious on busy mornings.
The results on bleached and heavily color-treated hair were the most striking. Our bleached-hair tester, who color-treats every 6–8 weeks, reported visibly smoother strands and noticeably less breakage when detangling after just two uses. Olaplex's own clinical claims — 3X stronger hair after 4 uses and 3X softer hair versus bleached hair — tracked reasonably well with what we observed, though as with any haircare clinical claim, individual results varied by how damaged the hair was to begin with.
The results on heat-damaged but non-chemically-treated hair were more modest but still positive. Our tester who flat-irons daily without color treatment noticed improved softness and reduced frizz, though the transformation was less dramatic than on the bleached-hair tester — which makes sense, since the bond-rebuilding technology has more damage to address on chemically processed hair.
The honest caveat at $34.00 for 100 mL: this positions Nº.3PLUS as a premium pre-shampoo treatment, and the full benefit requires pairing it with Olaplex's own Nº.4 shampoo and Nº.5 conditioner as part of a system — using it as a standalone product with a different shampoo brand will likely produce less dramatic results than what's shown in Olaplex's own before-and-afters. For anyone with genuinely damaged, bleached, or heavily processed hair, the investment in the full system is generally worth it; for those with healthy, undamaged hair, the benefit will be far more subtle.
