After 6 weeks of daily testing β gym sessions, running, HIIT training, casual wear, and travel β here's our take. Read our complete testing methodology.
Men's Activewear & Fitness Editor Β· Tested AprilβMay 2026 over 6 weeks Β· Methodology
The Nike Pro Dri-FIT Shorts are the best training shorts I've tested in four years of reviewing activewear β and at $40, they're also one of the best-value performance products in the entire men's athletic market. After 6 weeks of wearing these across weightlifting, sprinting, HIIT classes, casual street wear, and weekend travel, I can say with confidence: these are the only training shorts most active men will ever need.
The headline feature is Nike's Dri-FIT technology. The polyester-elastane fabric blend pulls sweat away from the skin and distributes it across the surface of the shorts for rapid evaporation. In practice, this means no cold, heavy fabric clinging to your thighs during a hard interval session. I wore these through a 45-minute track workout at 32Β°C β by the end, my shirt was soaked, but the shorts felt almost dry to the touch. The moisture management is as good as anything I've tested at twice the price.
The 3" inseam with integrated brief liner is the second defining feature. The brief liner provides light-to-moderate compression through the upper thigh without the restrictive tightness of a separate compression layer. Range of motion is genuinely unrestricted β I completed full depth squat jumps, lateral bounds, and over-hurdle drills without the shorts riding up, shifting, or creating friction. The liner stays in place through all movements, which is a problem I've encountered with cheaper alternatives that bunch or twist during lateral movements.
The construction detail that surprised me most was the side zip pocket. At 3" inseam length, most shorts in this category sacrifice pockets entirely, leaving nowhere to put a phone, hotel key, or AirPods case. Nike's side zip secures a large smartphone flat against the hip without bouncing or creating visible bulk in the waistband. I ran with my iPhone 15 Pro Max in the pocket and barely noticed it after the first 200 metres.
I tested the Nike Pro Shorts across the following real-world scenarios during our 6-week testing period: three gym sessions per week (compound lifting, Olympic lifting, and machine work), two running sessions per week (5K tempo runs and sprint intervals), six HIIT or group fitness classes, four days of casual wearing around the house and to the supermarket, and two short-haul flights. They performed excellently in every scenario. The Dri-FIT fabric handles the full sweat spectrum from light gym work to maximum-intensity intervals without breakthrough moisture at any point.
The recycled polyester fabric is worth noting separately. Nike uses at least 75% recycled content in this product β an environmental commitment that doesn't come at any performance cost. The fabric feels premium, has a smooth hand feel that's noticeably better than cheaper training shorts, and has held up through 30+ machine washes without any pilling, fading, or elastic degradation. The waistband retains its elasticity and the Dri-FIT finish remains effective even after repeated washing.
Sizing runs true to size β if you're a Medium in other Nike products you'll be a Medium here. The waistband has a drawstring for cinching, so you have approximately 1β2 inches of waist adjustability around your true size. Men between sizes should size up for comfort; the liner provides enough structure that the shorts won't look loose even a size up. Available in XS through 3XL, with 10+ colorways including black, navy, grey, and several bright training colors.
The verdict: at $40 (or $32 with Nike Membership pricing during sale events), the Nike Pro Dri-FIT Shorts are the go-everywhere training short that eliminates the need for separate gym, running, and casual active shorts. If you train more than twice per week and want one short that excels in every context, nothing else in this price range comes close. We awarded them our Best Seller distinction in our 2026 awards. Brief liner provides support without restriction. Lightweight fabric feels like wearing almost nothing. Drawstring waistband fits a range of waist sizes. No riding up during intense movement.
Dri-FIT moisture management is class-leading at this price point. Unrestricted range of motion. Stays in place through lateral, plyometric, and explosive movements. Best-in-class sweat handling.
30+ washes without pilling or fading. Elastic waistband retains stretch. Dri-FIT finish remains effective with proper care. Seams cleanly finished with no fraying after extended testing.
$40 is extraordinary value for this performance level. Nike Member pricing regularly brings it to $28β$32. Replaces gym, running, and casual active shorts in one purchase. Near-perfect value equation.
Works for weightlifting, running, HIIT, swimming (liner dries fast), casual wear, and travel. The clean design reads as athletic-casual outside the gym. Side zip pocket adds genuine everyday utility.

The most common questions our readers ask about the Nike Pro Dri-FIT Shorts.
For anyone who trains regularly β yes, without hesitation. At $40, the Nike Pro Dri-FIT Shorts offer Dri-FIT moisture management, a built-in liner, a secure side zip pocket, and 75%+ recycled construction at a price that significantly undercuts Lululemon ($68), Vuori ($64), and On Running ($75) at the same performance tier.
With Nike Member pricing (free to join at nike.com), these regularly drop to $28β$32 during sale events β at which point they are arguably the best value training short in the world. If you train more than twice per week and buy new shorts every 12β18 months, the cost-per-wear equation is extremely strong.
No β the built-in brief liner replaces separate underwear or compression shorts for most training activities. The liner provides light-to-moderate compression and coverage through the upper thigh, with a smooth inner fabric that reduces chafing even during long runs or high-rep training sessions.
The only exception would be athletes who require medical-grade compression (e.g., for post-injury support or circulation management), in which case the Nike Pro liner alone is not sufficient. For general training and casual wear, the liner is completely effective as a standalone layer.
3" (this review): The most popular length. Sits high on the thigh, maximum ventilation and freedom of movement. Preferred by sprinters, CrossFit athletes, and weightlifters who want maximum mobility. Best for explosive, multi-directional training.
5": Mid-thigh coverage. The most versatile length β suitable for both gym training and casual street wear. A good choice if you want one pair that works both in and out of the gym without the exposure of a 3" inseam.
9": Near knee-length. Closest to a traditional running short. Less popular for gym work but preferred for outdoor running, cycling, or court sports where more leg coverage is preferred. Browse all inseam lengths on the full Nike Pro Shorts collection page.
Both are excellent 3" training shorts with built-in liners and side zip pockets. The key differences: the Lululemon Pace Breaker ($68) uses Everlux fabric, which feels slightly silkier and lighter, and adds a rear zip pocket in addition to the side pocket. It's the better choice for long-distance runners who want the very best fabric feel and extra storage.
The Nike Pro ($40) wins on value, size range (XSβ3XL vs XSβXXL), sustainability (75%+ recycled vs partial), and accessibility β available at more retailers with more frequent sale events. For most athletes training at the gym or doing mixed sport activities, the Nike Pro delivers 90% of the Pace Breaker's performance at 60% of the price. The $28 price gap is hard to justify for most buyers.
The Dri-FIT coating is durable but requires correct care to maintain moisture-wicking performance over time. Machine wash cold, inside-out with similar colors. Use a sport detergent or standard detergent without softeners β fabric softener fills the microscopic pores in the Dri-FIT fabric that enable moisture transport, significantly reducing its effectiveness over time.
Tumble dry low or hang to dry β high dryer heat degrades the polyester fibres and elastic over time. Avoid bleach and ironing (the polyester will melt). Stored clean and dry, the shorts will maintain their Dri-FIT performance for 80β100+ washes. If wicking performance noticeably decreases, try washing with a sport-specific tech wash (Nikwax or similar) to restore the fabric.
Yes, regularly. Nike's best sale periods: Nike Member Sale events (multiple times per year, typically 20β30% off storewide β free to join), Black Friday / Cyber Monday (historically up to 40% off), and Nike.com clearance which runs year-round on past-season colorways at 20β40% off.
The Nike Pro Shorts appear frequently in the Nike Sale section at $28β$32. Popular sizes (M and L in black) sell out quickly during sale events β add to your Nike account wishlist to receive early access notifications as a Member. If you're flexible on colorway, off-season colors often drop to $25β$28.
