Marriott Bonvoy is the loyalty program powering the world's largest hotel company — encompassing 30+ brands and more than 9,000 properties across 141 countries. After six months of testing across stays ranging from a Courtyard by Marriott on a business trip to a W Hotels weekend stay and a Ritz-Carlton family trip, it's clear why Bonvoy remains the most powerful hotel loyalty program for frequent travelers willing to consolidate their stays within the Marriott ecosystem. The core mechanic is classic points-based: earn Bonvoy points on every qualifying dollar spent and on co-branded credit card purchases, then redeem those points for free nights, experiences, and partner transfers.

The points earning rate was the most immediately tangible benefit. Base members earn 10 points per $1 spent on qualifying hotel charges, with elite tiers earning a 25–75% bonus on top. In our testing across 15 stays, point accrual was consistently applied — including on food and beverage charges at the hotel — and the Marriott Bonvoy app made it easy to track balances in real time. The sweet spot for redemptions in our experience was mid-range Marriott brands (Westin, Le Méridien, Marriott Hotels) in secondary markets, where the points-per-dollar value often exceeded 1 cent per point.

On elite status perks, the program shows its real separation from OTA loyalty schemes. At Platinum Elite (50 qualifying nights), the combination of confirmed lounge access, Suite Night Award upgrades, and a free night certificate became genuinely valuable — our Platinum test stays included two suite upgrades confirmed before check-in via Suite Night Awards and lounge access at every property that offered one. The difference between Member tier and Platinum is dramatic enough that Bonvoy is fundamentally a program that rewards its most loyal guests far more generously than casual participants.

The brand breadth is unmatched. From budget-friendly Fairfield by Marriott to ultra-luxury Ritz-Carlton and EDITION properties, the ability to earn and redeem within a single program across every travel style and price point is Bonvoy's strongest structural advantage over any competitor. Points can also be transferred to 40+ airline programs, giving the currency dual-purpose flexibility that hotel-only programs can't match.

The honest caveats: Bonvoy's point redemption value has declined over the years following the move to dynamic pricing, which eliminated fixed award charts and introduced fluctuating redemption rates that can make points planning less predictable. Ambassador Elite — the program's top tier — requires 100 qualifying nights and $23,000 in annual spend, putting it out of reach for all but the most extreme road warriors. And outside the Marriott ecosystem, Bonvoy points earn nothing — making it a poor program for travelers who spread their stays across brands. That said, for the combination of global brand reach, genuinely differentiated elite status perks, and industry-leading airline transfer partners, Marriott Bonvoy remains the top hotel loyalty program pick for serious travelers. What we loved and didn't

+Pros

  • 30+ hotel brands in one program — from Fairfield by Marriott to Ritz-Carlton and EDITION, every travel style covered
  • Suite Night Awards at Platinum — confirmed suite upgrades pre-arrival, not just subject to availability at check-in
  • Lounge access at all eligible properties from Platinum Elite — a genuine luxury perk on business trips
  • 40+ airline transfer partners — broadest transfer network in hotel loyalty for dual-use point strategy
  • Points never expire as long as account remains active with any qualifying activity in 24 months
  • Annual free night certificate at Silver Elite (15 nights) — one of the fastest free night thresholds in any major program

Cons

  • Dynamic award pricing — the shift away from fixed award charts makes redemption planning less predictable than legacy competitors
  • Ecosystem-locked earning — points only accrue on Marriott brand stays; no earning at non-Marriott hotels unlike OTA programs
  • Ambassador Elite is extreme — 100 qualifying nights plus $23,000 in annual spend puts the top tier beyond most travelers' reach
  • Points devaluation risk — dynamic pricing removes the floor on redemption costs; popular dates at peak properties can require far more points than expected
  • Complex 6-tier structure — the gap between Silver (10 nights) and Platinum (50 nights) is steep and mid-tier benefits are modest
  • No instant discount at checkout — unlike Booking.com Genius, casual members don't see immediate savings without redeeming points

Frequently asked questions

Everything you need to know before joining or leveling up your Marriott Bonvoy membership.

Is Marriott Bonvoy still the best hotel loyalty program in 2026?

Marriott Bonvoy remains the strongest hotel loyalty program for travelers who stay frequently at branded hotels and want elite perks that deliver tangible, confirmed benefits — particularly the Suite Night Awards at Platinum Elite, which are unmatched in any competing program. The sheer breadth of 30+ brands and 9,000+ properties also makes it the most flexible single-program option for consolidating stays globally.

That said, the shift to dynamic award pricing has reduced the program's appeal for casual point hoarders compared to its peak years. World of Hyatt continues to offer better redemption value per point at its luxury properties for travelers who can concentrate their stays, and Booking.com Genius remains superior for casual travelers who want instant discounts without committing to a single hotel ecosystem.

Do Marriott Bonvoy points expire?

Marriott Bonvoy points do not expire as long as your account has at least one qualifying activity — such as a hotel stay, credit card purchase, or points transfer — within a rolling 24-month window. If your account goes 24 months without any activity, your points balance will be forfeited. Earning or redeeming even a small number of points resets the 24-month clock.

This is more forgiving than some competing programs (notably Hyatt, where points expire after 24 months of inactivity similarly) and easier to maintain for moderate travelers who stay at Marriott properties at least once every two years.

What is a Suite Night Award and how do I use it?

Suite Night Awards (SNAs) are upgrade certificates earned by Platinum Elite, Titanium Elite, and Ambassador Elite members — typically 5 per year at Platinum, with additional SNAs available at higher tiers. Unlike standard upgrade requests that are subject to availability at check-in, SNAs allow you to request a suite upgrade in advance (typically 5 days before arrival), and you receive confirmation whether the upgrade is granted before you arrive.

Not every property offers SNA-eligible suites, and upgrades are still subject to availability during the request window. However, in our testing, roughly 60% of SNA requests at full-service Marriott, Westin, and W Hotels properties were confirmed, making them a meaningfully reliable perk at Platinum Elite and above.

How many points do I need for a free night?

With dynamic pricing, there is no longer a fixed award chart — the number of points required for a free night varies by property, date, and demand. In general, budget-tier Marriott brands (Fairfield, Courtyard) can often be booked for 10,000–20,000 points per night during off-peak periods, while Ritz-Carlton and luxury EDITION properties may require 70,000–100,000+ points at peak times.

The free night certificates earned at Silver Elite (15 nights) and as a credit card annual benefit cap at 35,000 points, which covers a wide range of mid-tier Marriott properties but will not cover luxury brands. For the best redemption value in our testing, mid-range international markets (Southeast Asia, Eastern Europe) at Westin or Le Méridien properties consistently offered the strongest cents-per-point return.

Is Marriott Bonvoy worth it if I only travel occasionally?

For truly occasional travelers — fewer than 5–6 Marriott stays per year — Bonvoy's value is mainly in passively accumulating points that can eventually be redeemed for a free night. The program is free to join, and even Member-tier stays earn points at a 10x rate, so there's no downside to enrolling. However, elite status perks that make Bonvoy genuinely differentiated (lounge access, suite upgrades, priority service) only kick in at Platinum Elite (50 nights), which is a significant stay commitment.

For casual travelers, Booking.com Genius — which delivers an instant 10% discount from the first booking with no minimum stay requirement — may offer better immediate value. The two programs are not mutually exclusive: you can book a Marriott property through Marriott.com to earn Bonvoy points while holding Genius status on Booking.com for non-Marriott stays.

Marriott Bonvoy vs World of Hyatt — which should I choose?

Choose Marriott Bonvoy if: you travel frequently across a wide range of destinations and want to consolidate all stays in one program with 9,000+ properties, you value Suite Night Awards and lounge access at Platinum, or you want the flexibility to transfer points to 40+ airline programs.

Choose World of Hyatt if: you primarily stay at upper-upscale and luxury hotels where Hyatt has a property, you prioritize redemption value per point (Hyatt consistently offers better cents-per-point at comparable luxury properties), and you can concentrate enough stays to reach Globalist status (60 qualifying nights), which unlocks suite upgrades and club lounge access that rival Bonvoy's best perks. The tradeoff is Hyatt's far smaller property footprint — in many destinations, there simply isn't a Hyatt property, making Bonvoy the only viable branded choice.
