The tool is most reliable on well-travelled, high-frequency routes with large historical data sets — US domestic routes (New York-Los Angeles, Chicago-Miami) and major transatlantic routes (London-New York) showed the highest accuracy in our tests. It is less reliable on seasonal routes, new routes, or low-frequency international connections where KAYAK has limited historical data. What happens if I need to cancel or change a flight booked through KAYAK?

Like Skyscanner, KAYAK is a meta-search engine rather than a booking platform, so all post-booking changes and cancellations go through the airline or OTA you booked with — not KAYAK. KAYAK's support team can only assist with search-related queries; they have no access to your booking and cannot process changes or refunds.

For Hacker Fares specifically, this means you have two separate bookings to manage — one for each one-way ticket. If you need to cancel a Hacker Fare trip, you must contact each airline or agent separately. The cancellation and change policies of each ticket apply independently — a refundable outbound ticket does not make the return refundable if it was booked under a non-refundable fare class. This is primarily because Skyscanner covers 1,200+ airlines directly (including more low-cost carriers and regional operators) while KAYAK's 900+ airline coverage is supplemented by OTA aggregation, which occasionally adds a layer of agent markup.

However, KAYAK wins on specific scenarios where Skyscanner cannot compete: when Hacker Fares are available (KAYAK delivered lower fares in 7 of our 20 tests through Hacker Fares alone), when Price Prediction is accurate enough to prompt a useful wait (saved $89 per person on average when the "Wait" recommendation was correct), and when you want to compare Flight + Hotel bundle prices alongside standalone fares in a single view. Does KAYAK search Booking.com, given they share the same parent company?

Yes — KAYAK does include Booking.com flight results in its search, alongside Expedia, Priceline, and other OTAs. KAYAK and Booking.com are both owned by Booking Holdings, but KAYAK operates as an independent meta-search engine and searches across competing OTAs as well as its sibling companies. The relationship does not appear to bias results toward Booking Holdings-owned properties — in our 20 test searches, the lowest fares appeared from a range of different sources, not predominantly from Booking.com or Priceline.

For hotels, KAYAK's search does give prominent placement to Booking.com hotel results (given the deep integration within Booking Holdings), but for flights, the meta-search engine appears to maintain neutrality across sources.
