The Glossier Boy Brow launched in 2015 and hasn't meaningfully changed since — because it hasn't needed to. In ten years of covering beauty, I've tested every significant brow product that has launched in that time: pomades, pencils, wax pens, tinted gels, micro-stroking tools, lamination kits, and everything in between. Boy Brow has remained the product I reach for first, recommend most often, and reorder without thinking. After 8 weeks of structured testing across three testers (my own medium-brown brows; a colleague with light blonde brows; a third tester with dark, thick, black brows), I can articulate precisely why: it does the right thing.
The formula is a pomade-gel hybrid — thicker and more pigmented than a clear brow gel, thinner and more natural-looking than a traditional brow pomade. The spoolie wand (the same shape as a mascara wand) combs through the brows while depositing tinted pigment and a flexible hold polymer simultaneously. In a single stroke upward-and-outward, it lifts and sets each hair in place, fills any gaps with a soft wash of color, and gives the whole brow a slightly fluffed, voluminous appearance. The result looks like your brows, but better — not like brows that have been drawn on, filled with a pencil, or aggressively laminated. This distinction is the entire product.
The hold is the technical achievement. Most tinted brow gels either flake (too light a formula) or crunch (too heavy a wax base). Boy Brow does neither. After setting — approximately 60 seconds of air-dry — the brows move naturally with facial expression but return to their set position without hairs straying. In testing, we measured hold duration across three environmental conditions: normal office/indoor wear, a 45-minute outdoor run, and a humid gym session. Hold was intact in all three conditions up to 10 hours, with minor settling (not flaking) at 12 hours. No flaking was observed in any tester across 8 weeks.
On our blonde tester, who has sparse, light brows that typically require significant filling to show up, the Blonde shade added definition and visible fullness without any of the harsh contrast that brow pencils create. She described the result as "my brows, only someone noticed them today." On our dark-brow tester, who has naturally thick, dense black brows that she usually leaves unstyled, the Black shade tamed and shaped the brow arch without flattening the volume — a notoriously difficult balance. She described it as "like brow lamination but I can do it in 30 seconds every morning."
The Clear shade deserves specific mention. For anyone who doesn't want color — bleached brows, very light hair, or simply a preference for tint-free styling — the Clear delivers the same hold and volumising spoolie application as the tinted shades, without any pigment. It works exceptionally well as a finishing step over other brow products (pencil first, Boy Brow Clear to set), and it is our recommendation for anyone who is uncertain about shade selection: start with Clear to assess the wand and formula, then add a tinted shade once you're confident.
At $18, Boy Brow is priced at the lower end of specialty brow products — significantly less than the ABH Brow Gel ($22), Benefit Gimme Brow ($26), and Charlotte Tilbury Brow Fix ($28). It outperforms or matches all of them on the "natural, fluffy, all-day hold" brief. The product lasts approximately 4–5 months with daily use.
