Our editor's review

After booking 14 separate stays across cabins, city apartments, and a few genuinely odd "unique stays" in 2026 — here's our full verdict. Read our testing methodology.

Airbnb remains the default place most people start when they want something other than a hotel room — and after more than a decade, it's still the largest and most flexible vacation-rental marketplace out there. The core idea hasn't changed since 2008: hosts list a space, guests book it directly, and Airbnb takes a cut for handling payments, trust, and support in between. What has changed a lot is the scale and the polish. There are now over 8 million active listings spread across hosts in almost every country, and the platform has quietly grown into something closer to a full travel app, layering in Experiences, in-home Services, and — as of the 2026 Summer Release — boutique hotels and car rentals too.

The search and filtering experience was the standout across our testing. With more than 80 filter options, you can narrow down to specifics that hotel sites simply don't offer — step-free entry, a dedicated workspace, a lake view, pet-friendly, or "entire place" only. The map-based browsing makes it easy to find something in the exact neighborhood you want rather than wherever a hotel chain happened to build. We also leaned on the newer AI review highlights feature, which synthesizes the most relevant comments out of hundreds of reviews per listing instead of making you scroll through all of them — a genuinely useful time-saver when comparing several places at once.

On trust and protection, every booking now comes with AirCover for guests automatically included at no extra cost. If a listing turns out to be seriously misrepresented, or the host cancels last-minute, Airbnb will help rebook you somewhere comparable or refund you — and in our testing, the one time a host cancelled on us four days out, the rebooking support genuinely worked as advertised, finding a similar apartment within a few hours.

The booking and check-in flow felt smooth across nearly every stay — digital check-in instructions, in-app messaging with hosts, and a Trips tab that keeps wifi passwords, door codes, and house rules in one place even offline. Pricing transparency has also genuinely improved: total price (including cleaning and service fees) now shows up front in search results rather than appearing only at checkout, which used to be one of Airbnb's most common complaints.

The honest caveats: quality still varies host to host in a way it simply doesn't at a hotel chain — a 4.8-star listing can still surprise you with a noisy street or a host who's slow to respond, since Airbnb is a marketplace, not an operator. Service and cleaning fees can also meaningfully inflate the nightly rate you first see, especially on shorter stays, so it's worth checking the total price before comparing across listings. And while AirCover is solid for serious issues, it's explicitly not a substitute for travel insurance and won't cover minor inconveniences like a broken toaster. That said, for sheer breadth of options, neighborhood-level location control, and a protection program that actually paid off when we needed it, Airbnb remains the strongest all-around pick for vacation rentals. We awarded it Best Vacation Rental Platform in our 2026 Best Travel Apps Awards. Browse our full travel reviews or booking apps category.

What we loved and didn't

+Pros

  • 8+ million listings in 220+ countries — far broader selection than any single hotel chain
  • 80+ filtering options including step-free entry, pools, kitchens, and workspaces
  • AirCover for guests included free on every booking — rebooking or refund for serious issues
  • AI review highlights synthesize patterns across reviews instead of making you scroll through hundreds
  • Upfront total pricing shown in search results, including cleaning and service fees
  • In-app messaging, digital check-in, and offline Trips tab for smooth on-the-ground logistics

Cons

  • Quality varies by host — Airbnb is a marketplace, not an operator, so consistency isn't guaranteed
  • Cleaning and service fees can meaningfully raise the nightly rate, especially on short stays
  • AirCover is not travel insurance — it doesn't cover minor issues or travel-related disruptions
  • Regulatory restrictions in some cities (e.g. parts of Spain, France, and New York) limit available listings
  • No price-match guarantee on Stays — that perk currently only applies to the newer hotel listings
  • Newer hotel and car-rental categories are still rolling out city by city, so availability isn't universal yet

Frequently asked questions

Everything you need to know before booking your next Airbnb stay.

Is Airbnb still just home rentals, or has it changed?

Airbnb Stays — the core home, room, and unique-stay rentals reviewed on this page — is still the heart of the platform, but it's no longer the whole story. Airbnb has expanded into Experiences (local-led activities) and Services (private chefs, massages, photography, and more), and as of the 2026 Summer Release, it now also offers boutique hotels, car rentals, grocery delivery, and airport pickups in select cities.

If you just want to book a home or apartment, nothing about that core flow has changed — the new categories show up alongside it, not instead of it.

What exactly does AirCover for guests protect?

AirCover for guests is automatically included on every booking at no extra cost. If there's a serious issue your host can't resolve — the listing is significantly misrepresented, you can't get in, or the host cancels last-minute — Airbnb will help you find comparable accommodation or give you a full or partial refund, including service fees.

It's important to know what it doesn't cover: AirCover for guests is not an insurance policy and doesn't handle minor inconveniences (a broken toaster) or travel-related problems like flight delays or lost luggage. For those, optional travel or stay protection insurance is available at checkout in select countries.

How is the total price calculated, and why do fees vary?

Airbnb shows the total price — nightly rate plus cleaning fee and service fee — directly in search results now, which is a meaningful improvement over older versions of the platform where fees only appeared at checkout. The service fee guests pay typically falls in a standard range, while hosts now pay a single combined host service fee (around 15.5% as of 2026). Cleaning fees are set individually by each host and can vary significantly, so it's worth checking the total price rather than just the nightly rate when comparing listings.

Airbnb vs Vrbo vs Booking.com — which should I use?

Use Airbnb if: you want the widest selection of unique, individual properties — including private rooms and unusual stays — with built-in AirCover protection on every booking.

Use Vrbo if: you specifically want a whole home every time (no private rooms or shared spaces) and are traveling as a family or larger group.

Use Booking.com if: you want to compare hotels and vacation rentals side by side in one search, or you value not seeing a separate visible service fee at checkout. In our testing, Airbnb's combination of selection, filtering, and guest protection made it the strongest all-around pick, while Vrbo and Booking.com remain solid choices for their specific strengths.

Are there cities where Airbnb listings are restricted?

Yes — short-term rental regulation has tightened in several major markets. New York City has had significant restrictions on short-term private rentals since 2023, Paris intensified enforcement in 2026, and Barcelona has said it won't renew rental licenses set to expire in 2028. If you're booking in a heavily regulated city, you may see fewer entire-home listings than in years past, and it's worth double-checking a listing's legitimacy and reviews before booking.

Can I trust the reviews, and how does the new AI feature help?

Airbnb reviews are tied to verified stays — you can only review a listing after actually booking and completing a trip there, which keeps the review pool largely authentic. With over 1 billion guest and host reviews on the platform, reading every one for a listing you're considering isn't realistic. The newer AI review highlights feature (rolled out in the 2026 Summer Release) synthesizes patterns across all of a listing's reviews and surfaces what guests mention most — location accuracy, cleanliness, amenities, family-friendliness — so you get the gist without the scrolling.
